TENURE: Cash award to encourage a talented, graduating public high-school student to continue their music studies in jazz, blues or world music at a post-secondary level of their own choice.
CRITERIA:
1. Actively involved in a curricular secondary school music programme and/or recognized music lessons.
2. Graduating from a secondary school in Greater Victoria School District #61, Sooke School District #62, Saanich School District #63 or Gulf Islands School District #64.
PROCEDURE:
1. Obtain an application form from the link below, from your music instructor, school counsellor or the Victoria Jazz Society office.
2. The application form must be accompanied by the following items:
A. Explain, in a personal letter (one copy to be handwritten), how the applicant self-evaluates his/her musical, academic and community strengths. State plans for future studies and intended career plans, thus how the scholarship money will be used. Elaborate on any pertinent awards, commendations or special information regarding their musical experiences in the past two years.
B. Send a good quality CD or cassette recording containing performances demonstrating musicality and technical ability on a major instrument or voice. The recorded information should be no more than 10 minutes in length and include a ballad and an up-tempo selection or a single piece including both styles. If performing on more than one instrument, please submit a recording for each. Label each recording with the musician’s name, the name of the piece and the composer’s name.
C. Include at least two letters of recommendation, one written by the applicant’s current music teacher. They should explain why the applicant would be a good candidate for the scholarship.
3. The short-listed applicants may be asked to play a live audition before the end of April. The winner will be notified by June 1 and announced during TD Victoria International JazzFest 2010.
