Joey Alexander Trio

“On Eclipse, he ekes more imagination and nuance out of the piano than ever before.” – DownBeat

His playing was fired with an enthusiasm and joyful exuberance.” – Syncopated Times

There have been many prodigies in the world of jazz, but very few can compare with the crazy-talented pianist Joey Alexander, who was born in Indonesia and taught himself to play jazz at age six by listening to his dad’s records. He became an overnight sensation when Wynton Marsalis invited him to play at Jazz at Lincoln Centre at age 11, closely followed by a CBS 60 Minutes feature alongside Marsalis in 2016. By the age of 14, Alexander had released two Grammy-nominated CDs. These days, although still just a teenager, he continues to evolve by leaps and bounds. His 2017 release Joey.Monk.Live! was remarkable for its sophistication, while his newest CD, Eclipse, shows off his powerful gifts as a composer, arranger, and bandleader. Even the critics and festival bookers normally skeptical of young prodigies are won over by the musical maturity underlying Alexander’s extraordinary technical facility. He celebrates his 16th birthday at his debut performance in Victoria.
