“She is an exciting and unique talent, and I admire her greatly.” – Sting
“Laila Biali melds traditional jazz and contemporary pop so effortlessly that neither style seems out of place on the same record.” – Spinner Magazine
CBC’s Saturday Night Jazz host Laila Biali started out studying classical piano, but was playing jazz professionally by 19. Her exceptional gifts as singer, pianist, and songwriter soon saw her travelling in elite company, first as a backup vocalist for Sting, and later touring with Grammy winners Suzanne Vega, Chris Botti, and Paula Cole. Biali has an impressive discography: highlights include the elegant Live in Concert that earned a four-star rave from DownBeat, while her 2018 self-titled CD received a 2019 JUNO Award for “Best Vocal Jazz Album.” She has crafted a uniquely catchy and sophisticated jazz-pop sound, and is a welcome performer at venues and festivals literally around the world, including Carnegie Hall and the North Sea Jazz Festival. The glamorous and oh-so-talented Biali currently splits her time between Toronto and New York City. She last played in Victoria with her trio in 2018, and we’re delighted to have her back at JazzFest. Her band consists of Adam Robert Thomas bass/vocals and Ben Wittman drums.
