Bamba Wassoulou Groove
Thursday, July 17 | Wicket Hall, Strathcona Hotel | 7:30pm

“Bamba Wassoulou Groove proved that Malian guitars truly speak to the sun. Percussion, drums, and vocals elevate the psychedelic, soaring tangle of sounds that flow from the guitarists at the front of the stage.” — Clash Music
Bamba Wassoulou Groove knows the undeniable power of Malian guitars. Founded in the West African music hub of Bamako in 2013, this powerful collective of five musicians is blasting Malian music into the 21st century with their distinctive and infectious sound. They carry on the legacy of the Super Djata Band, one of Mali’s hottest groups of the 1980s, and the Super Rail Band, who were among the first groups to combine Afro-Cuban influences with bluesy, electrified guitar-driven Manding music.
The band breathes new life into a genre that remains as potent and original as ever by blending timeless Bambara classics with fresh compositions, igniting the stage with a powerful energy and captivating audiences worldwide. With intricate solos and soulful vocals, Bamba Wassoulou Groove’s live performances are nothing short of electrifying, resonating deeply with fans while pushing the boundaries of contemporary Malian music.
Described as “West African guitar playing at its finest” by RootsWorld, the Bamba Wassoulou Groove are one of the top practitioners of the unmistakable and irresistible, psychedelic modern Malian sound – this is intense dance music!
