Victoria Jazz Society

Miguelito Valdés & Orquesta Obatalá

Sunday, June 23 | Cameron Bandshell, Beacon Hill Park

“Valdés’s curiosity and creativity are matched by a respect for and deep understanding of Cuban roots music in all its diversity.” – The Georgia Straight

Victoria’s trumpeter Miguelito Valdés has performed with many of Cuba’s top performers and participated in the award-winning recording “La Rumba Soy Yo”, which won a Latin GRAMMY in 2001.  He has also played and collaborated with important musicians abroad including Michael Brecker, Herbie Hancock, John Patitucci, Danilo Perez, Wayne Shorter, Wallace Roney, Brian Blade, Sting, Coldplay, U2, and Maroon 5.

Described as one of Cuba’s most highly regarded trumpet players of his generation, Valdés has become, since making Vancouver Island his home, very involved in the local music scene.  Orquesta Obatalá is composed of eight extremely talented Cuban musicians who live in Victoria and the Gulf Islands. Your feet won’t resist joining the dance floor while they play the most famous Latin hits – from danzon and son, to salsa, bachata, and bolero. Put on your best dance shoes, you won’t be able to leave the dance floor! Cynthia Rodriguez keyboards/vocals, Michel Rivero bass/vocals, Lander Peña vocals, Noedy Hechavarria saxophones, Armando Alvarez saxophones, Hector Ramos congas/vocals, Jose Sanchez drums/timbales
